Sunshiki Featured on NHK Kochi: Seaweed-Based Methane Reduction Technology in the Spotlight
On March 12, 2026, NHK Kochi's local program Kochi Ichiban (series: Climate Change) featured Sunshiki Inc. and its seaweed-based methane reduction technology.
Methane is a greenhouse gas with 28 times the warming potential of CO2, and reducing methane emissions from livestock is an urgent global challenge. Sunshiki focuses on Asparagopsis, a red seaweed cultivated in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Bioactive compounds found in this seaweed have been shown to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle by up to 98%.
The program highlighted Sunshiki's work as a Kochi-born startup taking on a global climate challenge, spotlighting its cultivation, processing technology, and ambitions for international scale-up.
