Joint Project on Asparagopsis Seaweed Receives Australia-Japan Foundation Grant

We are excited to announce that Sunshiki and Drift (Australia) have received a grant from the Australia-Japan Foundation for their joint project, "Advancing Australia-Japan Cooperation to Progress Asparagopsis Seaweed Cultivation."

This project builds on research into Asparagopsis, a seaweed in Australia known for its ability to reduce methane emissions. When used as feed for ruminants (such as cattle and sheep), Asparagopsis has been proven to cut methane emissions significantly, offering a key solution for fighting climate change. Australia has led this research, while Japan brings a long history of seaweed cultivation and expertise in commercial farming. By combining these strengths, the project aims to speed up the commercialization of Asparagopsis and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Project Details

With the grant’s support, researchers from Drift will visit Japan to collaborate with Sunshiki. In return, representatives from Sunshiki will visit Australia to observe research facilities and learn from the Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance (ASSA). The team will also attend the Seagriculture Asia-Pacific Conference in Australia, expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Significance of the Project

Australia and Japan each have unique strengths in seaweed production. Australia has made great progress with Asparagopsis research, while Japan excels in cultivating seaweed and has solid experience in commercial farming. This project will combine their expertise to create new markets and strengthen their cooperation for the future.

Future Outlook

This project will not only enhance cooperation between the companies but also boost the growth of the seaweed industry in both countries. The grant will help fund further research and technological developments in the field.
